It's spring! The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and you're wondering what you're going to do with your garden now that planting season has arrived. Lucky for you, you can learn from the best - expert gardener John Carloftis - at an upcoming event.

Carloftis began his business, John Carloftis Fine Gardens, in 1988. He is a noted garden designer and has been featured in magazines such as Country Gardens and Martha Stewart Living. On Thursday, May 24 at 7p.m., the Mercantile Library on Walnut Street in downtown Cincinnati welcomes Carloftis as part of their "Hearth and Home" lecture series. "It's one of our signature events," says Albert Pyle, executive director at the Mercantile Library.

As a well-known artist and successful business owner, Carloftis is more than qualified for this speaking event. His work is award-winning, and he has a specialty with designing beautiful gardens within small spaces. "So many of our members are working with decks and balconies," says Pyle. However, recognition and awards are not his only qualifications. Carloftis has written three books which showcase his gardening expertise and give advice to hopeful gardeners. "I can't stress how well he knows the territory," says Pyle. It is his advice which will be most beneficial to the gardening population of Cincinnati.

Turns out, gardening not only beautifies your home, but it's also good for your health. While the benefits of spending time out of doors are numerous, studies have long since shown that gardening as a hobby or even as a profession may improve your health. "Gardening gets you outside and active," says Pyle. But this is not the only reason gardening may be beneficial to your health. Exposure to sunlight and exercise, even mild exercise, have been known to treat symptoms of depression. Also, pleasant sight of plants and gardens has been known to reduce stress hormone levels.

Though the Mercantile is a member library, the event is open to anyone at $10 for members and $15 for non-members. The library will be accepting reservations from now up to the day before the event. Guests are invited to meet Carloftis at the reception held before the lecture and have their books signed by the author himself. Books will be made available for sale at the event as well. Contact the Mercantile Library for further information, or to reserve a spot at the lecture.
