Nourish: Does Your Doctor Make Tea? Meeting Stefanie Stevenson for a consultation feels like having tea with a friend (who happens to know just what you need her to about your particular health concern!). Dr. Stevenson has built her practice so that she can spend up to 90 minutes in each patient visit, in a comfortable, welcoming office where she might literally offer you a cup of tea while you tell her your story and she determines a recommended course of care for you. As an Integrative Physician with Nourish, Dr. Stevenson specializes in helping her patients make subtle changes in their lifestyles in order to address their medical conditions.
I met Stefanie one year ago and knew right away she would be a terrific addition to Nourish. Her approachable personality and ability to relate to our clients was evident from day one. If you were to talk to one of her patients (including me!) you would likely hear about an exceptional and unique experience in today’s medical environment. Her patients walk away with a new sense of empowerment that comes with her patient centered education and individual lifestyle recommendations.
Stefanie’s journey to integrative medicine really began when her brother was diagnosed with diabetes. She grew up in a small town in northern Minnesota where family doctors were the norm and she enthusiastically set her sights on becoming a doctor.
After graduating from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Stevenson spent 15 years in practice in family medicine including four years of service in the US Navy. While she loved seeing patients of all ages and taking care of families, she was frustrated by the very short amount of time she could spend with each patient and by the pressure to prescribe medicine without sufficiently addressing other issues with patients. Yearning for more time with her patients and a broader approach to patient care, she entered and graduated from the Dr. Andrew Weil Fellowship Program in Integrative Medicine at The University of Arizona. There, she discovered an approach to medicine that felt completely right to her and fulfilled her childhood vision of what a doctor should be.
Integrative medicine is a healing-oriented medicine that focuses on the multiple aspects of health – physical, emotional, and spiritual. Dr. Stevenson does not sell supplements or dole out a cookie-cutter set of instructions to every patient she sees like some integrative practitioners are prone to do. Instead, she carefully listens to each patient’s story and recommends a highly customized care plan. She writes an extensive follow up letter to each patient outlining her recommendations. And of course, there’s the tea. It’s such a simple thing but such a welcoming and relaxing ritual to enjoy together. Really…when is the last time your doctor offered you tea?!
Dr. Stevenson lives in Montgomery with her husband and three children where she is actively involved in her community and her children’s school. She sees patients in Montgomery and I know she’d be delighted to see YOU if this kind of approach to health care sounds like just what the doctor ordered.
