Looking Fine in 2009 Find out what you should be putting in and taking out of your beauty regime. A local esthetician shares the latest tips and trends from the forefront of the beauty biz.
Paula Provenzano is in the business of making women feel the best about themselves. As an educator, writer and consultant for the spa industry, she has advised clients on a variety of beauty-related issues for the past 15 years.
"My work can encompass a number of things, such as training spa technicians, developing treatments and operational procedures, working with the clients of the companies who buy the products I represent to boost retail sales, customer service, and client retention," she says.
Part of her job is staying on top of the latest and greatest trends in beauty products. And right now she says a sun-kissed glow is on the A-List.
Look for products that produce a "luminous glow," she says. Flip through the pages of Vogue, and you’ll see models with faces that appear to be moist and almost shiny. Reflective pigments create this look by making the skin look radiant, and they have the added benefit of diminishing the appearance of fine lines and other imperfections, Provenzano says.
To match your radiant skin, choose products to make your eyes pop with radiance. You’ll have an extra excuse to bat your eyelashes this year with the newest products on the market. One that creates a tube-like coating on each eyelash has been around for a while but is now available on the mass market. Another new product that makes the lashes grow almost overnight is pending FDA approval and might be available by the end of the year.
By day, neutral tones like silver and graphite are hot for eye shadow. And there’s good news for those who can’t make up their minds when it comes to a consistent color palette.
"This is a very eclectic time for makeup, with no one trend dominating the color palette or the overall look," Provenzano says. So express yourself the way you feel best and still keep up with the trends.
But while trends come and go, a woman should have some staples in her beauty routine. Many women forget about their eyebrows, but properly grooming and enhancing eyebrows, can provide an instant pick-me-up. And you don’t have to shell out a lot of cash to be brow-rific.
"Even if you don’t plan on going for professional brow grooming on a regular basis, it is well worth having it professionally done to see the right way to do it," Provenzano says. "I became known for my meticulous attention to brow shaping when I worked a number of models in New York City, and I still see a handful of private clients who take their brow-grooming as seriously as they do their cut and color services."
You might spend less time at the spa and more at home this year, Provenzano says, and it won’t just be because of in-home tweezing. Many of the technologies - such as light therapy, microdermabrasion and hair removal - are now being translated into easy-to-use in-home devices.
"While the therapeutic benefits are not as profound as what is achieved with spa or medical grade devices that are definitely a way to bridge the gap between treatments and boost the efficacy of home-care regimens," she says.
Provenzano is the go-to woman for all things beauty. She will accept a few new clients for spa services starting this month. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to set up an appointment.
