What do handbags, hope and having fun have in common? The "Tour for the Cure!"

The program began as a partnership between the Dearborn County Convention, Visitor & Tourism Bureau and the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer. It ties together a trip to Southeast Indiana with a donation option, and it has raised more than $20,000 for the Vera Bradley Foundation since 2008.

"We first began Tour for the Cure in 2006 after searching for a way to give back and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer," says Jennifer Clayton, public relations representative for the Dearborn County Convention, Visitor & Tourism Bureau and Tour for the Cure. Clayton says they chose the Vera Bradley Foundation as their signature recipient for two primary reasons. "First of all, because the Foundation is supported by Vera Bradley, Inc. [and] we thought it would be a nice fit with our organization since our mission is to promote travel and tourism," she explains. "Secondly, we wanted to partner with a Midwest-based organization. Luckily for us, the Foundation is based in Indiana and sponsors targeted funding initiatives in breast cancer research, including major endowments at the Indiana University School of Medicine."

Visitors can participate in Tour for the Cure in many ways – as an individual or couple who purchases a package; with a group of six-eight or more on a luncheon or day trip tour; as a motorcoach passenger; or as an attendee at a Tour for the Cure event.

"Participant response to Tour for the Cure has been tremendous, with many survivors and their family and friends thanking us for starting this program," Clayton says. "We want visitors to Southeast Indiana to 'have fun and give hope,' and this has been a terrific way to do that. It is so gratifying to be able to use a program like this to make a difference in the lives of women with breast cancer."

Dearborn County’s special Tour for the Cure overnight packages are available throughout the entire year. The packages, which include a hotel stay, dinner and various amenities, can be booked online and customized with a variety of unique add-ons perfect for mother/daughter getaways or get-togethers among sisters and friends.

"Once they’ve booked a basic package, participants can add on a variety of fun activities, such as tours of Hillforest Victorian House Museum or the Creation Museum, or fun activities like gaming at Hollywood Casino, a round of golf, movie tickets and more," says Clayton.

All Tour for the Cure Hotel Packages include accommodations and dining, plus a $10 Tour for the Cure donation by the selected hotel and restaurant. Basic Tour for the Cure overnight packages begin at $94.99 before tax, with add-on activities available for an additional cost. Final price depends on selected accommodations and activities chosen by the visitor at the time of booking.

Want to participate, but just want to take a day trip? "Designed for groups of six or more, our Tour for the Cure day trips feature a special wellness-inspired luncheon at Whisky’s Family Restaurant in Lawrenceburg or Applewood on the River in Aurora, as well as add-ons such as an Arty Party or Gardening Workshop," says Clayton. "Best of all, each meal includes $1 Tour for the Cure donation that benefits the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer."

Visitors looking for a fun, hands-on holiday activity to do with friends will enjoy one of the "make it and take it" holiday jewelry-making sessions at The Framery or holiday gardening projects at McCabe's Greenhouse & Floral. "Designed for groups of eight people or more, the classes are a great way to show off your creative side," Clayton explains. "It’s a wonderful way to give back this holiday season, plus end up with a handmade gift perfect for giving to family and friends."

Other Tour for the Cure events throughout the year, include the Tour for the Cure Golf Event in June, Tour for the Cure Scenic Road Rally in October, Girls’ Night Out event in October and Perfectly Pink multi-day tubing event at Perfect North Slopes in February.
