Dare for Flair: When and Where to Wear your White Jeans

Dare for Flair: When and Where to Wear your White Jeans
In season or out, there is always a place to wear your white jeans. Our fashion columnist shares how to find the best fit and how to style a look with them.

No white after Labor Day and before Memorial Day is your stereotypical rule in fashion, but is it a rule meant to be broken? I recently ordered a pair of white jeans and am excited to wear them. To establish the rule and determine if there are differences in different climates, I sent an inquiry to some style bloggers and boutique owners across the country.

My favorite response: "When the weather's nice and your rear end is flat enough, go with white the first warm day!"

Flair's Take Away

Overall, it seems the more fashion conscious a region, the less likely they are to pay attention to traditional rules. If visiting Southern California, Colorado, Florida or Manhattan, you will see white jeans all year round. Conservative dressed cities like D.C., Boston, the Midwest and San Francisco are more likely to adhere to the belief that whites, seersucker and linen shouldn't come out of the closet until Memorial Day and need to go back in hiding by Labor Day.

My advice for the Queen City is to begin wearing white jeans on the warm days of late March. This will give you enough time to wear them before the summer humidity arrives, and the desire for fall fashions makes you ready to pack them away.

If you need a new pair, keep your genes in mind. If you can pull off the skinny leg, go for it. For those who cannot, let the flare of the leg counterbalance your hips and rear. In other words, the slimmer your midsection, the straighter the pant leg.

Years ago, a sorority sister suggested wearing a skirt and dark tights on rainy days. It is much easier to wash tights than to dry clean pants. It's the same thought with white pants. Regardless of the season, take heed when you are going to be walking through slush or puddles, spending ample time with toddlers, or heading to a party that is serving marinara and red wine!

Ideas to Wear with White Jeans

Want to take a dare from Flair and wear them out of season? The trick is to make your look match the season. If you pair your white jeans with a great pair of camel boots and a chunky sweater, then you're good to go. Jackie O. made this look fresh years ago with a dark turtle neck and dark boots.

For in-season options, wear a bright colored or patterned tunic. On a cooler night, pair a printed T-shirt with a long sweater. For a tonal look, beige or gray tops are great. Add a pair of Jack Roger Navajo sandals in metallic or bright colors for a chic but comfortable look.

Boot cut white jeans paired with a white T-shirt and a dark blue washed denim jacket is a classic look for all ages. Add color with accessories, such as turquoise or emerald green colored heels, embellished sandals or chunky necklace and bracelets.

The nautical theme is all over the stores for resort and spring. Complement the navy stripes with red, yellow or Kelly green accents.

A retiree who left the Midwest recently told me she misses the change of seasons. I think it's the change in clothes, not the weather, that she really misses. There are so many other colors to wear. If in doubt of how white will be received, try another outfit. Your intuition is always right.
