Orange on Green: Behind Every Good Man...
...Is there a stronger woman?  Our financial columnists take us on their personal journey to reveal how their wives have helped them each step of the way.

As business partners in an ever evolving practice, we have demanded a lot from our spouses. We have not always made it easy for them. From late nights and unpredictable schedules at times, we have put plenty of pressure on our significant others. Especially as a financially focused business, our family's financial journey has taken some difficult and challenging turns, but through it all, our wives' commitment to us has been unwavering, yet respectfully challenging to us at the same time.

Maintaining the edge with financial needs and wants has been a pursuit of ours since forming the company. As we have learned more about the financial world for the business, we have taught them, and they have listened. One lesson we've all learned is the need to save, so when we pushed the numbers to save 20 percent of our income, they supported us as a united team. This commitment to save took more than just saying we would do it. We had to change our spending habits, and they worked together with us to make it happen. Saving is only part of the battle, though, and spending habits also needed to be changed to work against debt. Debt and poor cash flow management contribute to high stress levels and can set up a family for bankruptcy should a disaster occur. So we have worked closely with our wives to control outflows, and at the end of the day, they have executed beautifully.

Money really isn't everything, though. Our fathers raised us to work long and hard and do what needs to get the job completed. No excuses. But part of our job is to maintain a work/family balance. Our wives constantly remind us to focus on the family when home and not to bring the work home with us. While we shouldn't need to be reminded of this, we appreciate our wives' reminders in addition to their applying the same intensity we have for our work to our families.

Our experience has proven that behind every good man there is a better woman. For this and all women who play this critical role in their relationships, we thank you.
