Orange on Green: Buy Local, Reward Cincinnati Business
Awards are great, but any business owner will tell you the greatest reward is simply the client. Our financial columnists fill you in on how your dollars can help the local economy.

We believe this week's theme is a great opportunity to recognize a very special set of businesses in Cincinnati as their reward. We would like to recognize the locally owned businesses of Cincinnati. It frequently has been said that the small businesses in our country are the back bone of America.

For our local community, the Greater Cincinnati community would not be what it is without our locally owned businesses. They employ most of us in the community and contribute to our tax base. Most all contribute to the community in many ways and do it without fan fare and/or recognition. We do not hear about many of the businesses on a regular basis, but we count on them for many of our products and services we use every day.

In this increasingly global economy, big companies not headquartered here in the Greater Cincinnati area are always working to gain a percentage of our wallets. We want to remind you of one important fact that has been well researched and documented. For every dollar you spend with a locally owned business, 25 cents more stays here in the local economy. So the next time you go grocery shopping, ask yourself if you can get the same thing at a Cincinnati-headquartered store or maybe support an independent grocer. Buy your office supplies from a local office supply shop, and take care of your dry-cleaning at a local provider.

Many times we do not think about it when we make a purchase. We either try to find the cheaper price or let the advertisements direct us where to go. On your next purchase, think and buy local and help keep more money in our local community and economy.

We win as our businesses thrive. Our communities become stronger. The best award for any business is your business as a customer.
