Seeing to the Community's Needs

Seeing to the Community's Needs
This optometrist goes beyond her call of duty to help make sure everyone in the community has the opportunity for good vision. Learn how she donates her time and talent to help others see.

Dr. Diana Gilbert is a business owner and single mother of three. And with all that responsibility she still does a tremendous amount of volunteer work. So as she donates her time and energy, we want to recognize her as our 2010 Health Woman of the Year.

InfantSEE

Through the InfantSEE program, Gilbert donates free eye assessments to 6- to 12-month olds. The national program has two main intentions: to detect any vision problems early and to educate parents about eye health.

"You rarely find a problem, but if you do, it can change this child's life because their normal development can be completely thrown off if their eyesight's not appropriate," Gilbert says.

Prevent Blindness and Vision USA

Gilbert also helps adult patients through Prevent Blindness and VISION USA. Both of these programs help individuals who do not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare but still have a low income that makes it hard to meet eye care needs.

Gilbert sees Prevent Blindness patients at least once a week and donates free eye exams. For these patients Gilbert does not supply any products like glasses or contact lenses, as Luxxotica has partnered with the organization to donate their products. "There's no better feeling than when you help someone in Prevent Blindness that have to come in because they're down and they come back later and say, 'Thank you! I have a job now. I'm doing well,' " Gilbert says. While she doesn't see as many patients through VISION USA, Gilbert volunteers for this program by donating both eye exams and products.

Realeyes

In addition to all of the free eye exams Gilbert donates, she also donates her time and knowledge to the Realeyes program. Working to educate students, Gilbert visits about four local grade schools and preschools a year to give eye health presentations.

At each school, Gilbert will make three or four presentations catered to the appropriate age group, and each presentation will discuss how to take care of their eyes. "For me I think it's rewarding because it's amazing how much these children want to know and how much they want to learn," Gilbert says.
