Orange on Green: The Edge in Financial Education

Orange on Green: The Edge in Financial Education
Word of mouth is still the best form of marketing, so our financial columnists share a letter written by one of their members to show how their leading concept helps get your finances under control.

We received a letter from a member of our Orangefinancial community that was written to a friend, and we felt her description spoke to the cutting-edge program Orange has built:

We live in a world where changes are occurring so quickly, and technology is being replaced seemingly every other week. It's very easy to get lost in the chaos and feel disconnected from your world. That's why I'm writing.

I recently had an experience that was so "unique" that I had to share it with you. As you know, I have always struggled with money. Not making it, but keeping it! I just did what everyone else around me was doing, which usually meant buy first and pay later and buy whenever I want.

Unfortunately, that lifestyle caught up with me. The credit card bills kept coming. The worst part is, I can't remember most of the things I even bought on credit. But the bills kept coming. When things were at their worst, I knew I had to change, but how? All I seemed to meet were investment people who wanted me to investment money I didn't have and make commitments I knew I couldn't keep.

Finally, I found someone that actually helped me get a handle on the situation. This group did several things that you rarely see in the business world these days. 1) took the time to listen to my story, and when they asked me questions, listened to my answers. 2) didn't have any kind of agenda. I never felt that they were going to try and sell me something. 3) took the time to educate me about basic financial ideas.

When I completed my first few meetings with them, I felt much more confident about money. After giving it some careful thought, I realized the difference between this experience and other financial people I'd met with was a lot like visiting a doctor. The other people treated me like a doctor who was writing prescriptions before they even knew what was wrong with me, just wanting to sell me something.

This other group treated me like a doctor who wants to diagnose the problem, understand my concerns, find the correct treatment, and most importantly, put plans into place to prevent future problems. In today's world, THAT is significant.

If I can leave you with a thought: Money can be confusing, stressful and frustrating to deal with. Remember these three points and you can get yourself on the right path. Find someone to work with who:

1) Engages in conversation with you, takes the time to listen to you and your situation, and gives you as much time as you need.

2) Works with you to create long-term solutions and strategies to your problems.

3) Educates you about money and helps you understand choices.

I encourage you to find someone like I did, and you'll replace that stress, confusion and frustration with feelings of confidence and competence.
