Orange on Green: Five Tips to Winterize Your Savings

Orange on Green: Five Tips to Winterize Your Savings
Little things can and will go a long way, so our financial columnists remind you of a few items that will help keep your money in your pocket this holiday season.

Winter in the Greater Cincinnati area means cold temperatures, especially in the evenings. As you may already know, we teach the importance of systematic savings, and our client community strives to save 20 percent of their gross income. Winter months mean higher gas and electric costs, which can impact your savings plan. So here are a couple things to consider to help you keep your energy costs in check:

1. Close your fireplace flue after each use. Remember to make sure the fire is out first.

2. Make sure to inspect the caulking of your windows periodically and make any necessary repairs.

3. If you have not noticed, the energy industry is going through deregulation, which means there are multiple companies now permitted to provide you with your gas and electric. To get you to sign as a customer they are offering fixed multiple year rates at a discount. Just make sure to read carefully what the offer is and do a little research to make sure you are getting the best deal. The good news is deregulation means lower rates because of competition.

4. Check your weather stripping on all of your outside doors. Weather stripping wears out after a while but can be easily replaced. Run your hand around the door frame from the inside of your house on the first cold day, if you feel a draft you may need to replace some weather stripping.

5. Finally, make sure you check your thermostat settings. Remember, especially if you do not have young children, you can allow your thermostat to drop the inside temperatures in the home at night and during the day if no one is home. Even the mid-60s can feel comfortable with a sweatshirt.

Here's to a low energy-cost winter with your being aware and efficient about keeping heat in your home instead of allowing it to escape — with your savings. Put the money you save into your savings plan. With the holidays around the corner and the gift list filling up, these savings reminders can assist in finding the money needed for gifts. Certainly this is a winter trend that never goes out of style.
