Orange on Green: A Sight for the Flights Airplane takeoffs can give anyone a rush of excitement, but you don't have to take a flight for the fun. Our financial columnist shares a new-found place for entertainment that won't cost you a dime. In all honesty, I don't get out very often. My "unique" experiences have been limited to Chuck-E-Cheese, our local parks, putt-putt and the pool during the summers. Unique? Not so much.
So for the Discover New Places column, I consulted the 10 other parents in the "parent waiting room" as my 6 year-old performed in dance practice. "Anybody know of a unique place in town to take the family?" I ask. A dad in the corner pipes up: "There is a cool place down at CVG to watch the planes come in." I looked around the room. The rest of the parents are moms, and all of them are intrigued by the comment. No one else seems to have heard of this secret spot.
"Every once in a while when the air force or navy are going to do a fly over for a big game, they normally come into CVG to do some run throughs," he says. "That's a true treat."
So how does he know of this diamond in the rough? "I work at CVG as security detail, and unless you work at the airport, most people aren't aware of this place," he says.
He sparked my interest. Everyone's always looking for affordable entertainment, especially with a not-so-great economy, so this sounds like it may have some potential — no admission costs and little drive time. Just pack the cooler with some drinks and snacks and hit the road. The dad also recommended to bring the camera along.
For directions to the lookout location, I got directions straight from my source. "If you take the Mineola Pike exit by the airport, take a right off the exit. Left at the first stop, and follow this road to where it T's into a second road. Left at the T, and it dead-ends into Donaldson (busy road). Turn left on Donaldson," he says. "About 1/4 mile down on the left-hand side you are sure to see others parked on the gravel driveway. That's right where it is. Almost looks like an access road."
My family will be taking this unique trip, and I will let you know in a future column just how great the view is. If you are aware of the location and/or you do make the trip down, please share your observations in the comment section below.
