Orange on Green: Composing Financial Harmony
This week our financial columnists hands the mic to Orangefinancial's Mike Davis, who shares how you can make your financial plan music to your ears.

Recently, I was privileged to experience one of the greatest rock bands in history, the band Rush. If you're not familiar with Rush, they are a three-man band that has played together for 37 years. And last night, they sounded better than ever.

Watching these world-class musicians perform, it occurred to me that each member of the band is one of the best, if not the best in the world at what he does — drummer, guitarist and bass player. However, when you mix the three together, the experience becomes magic. It is a privilege to hear and see a team create music that now spans decades.

A great piece of music actually is constructed of several parts: the rhythm section, the lyrics, harmonies, etc. Improperly pieced together, you have a disaster that is quite painful to the ears. Properly woven together, the music literally can change your mood and your life.

The structure of your financial plan is similar to music. If your money is thrown into various products without any forethought, it's difficult — if not impossible — to feel a sense of comfort, confidence or certainty about your financial well-being.

Consider Ava and Jim. Over the years, this couple purchased several investments, put money into employer-sponsored retirement plans, and acquired life and disability insurance. But they never coordinated their purchases.

When Jim was seriously injured in an automobile accident and unable to work for two years, they had to spend almost all of their investment and retirement money because they hadn't reviewed their disability insurance plan through Jim's work. It had limited coverage, and by the time they found out, Jim was already laid-up at home. If they had taken the time to coordinate all the pieces of their financial picture, they could have provided for the shortage in Jim's disability insurance coverage and protected their investments and their retirement.

Think about your financial world. Does it flow like your favorite piece of music? Or, like a bad composition, is it a mish-mash of ideas that don't work well together, and don't inspire positive feelings? If you're not sure, now is the time to act. Don't wait, like Ava and Jim, to discover that your financial world is poorly put together.

Much like listening to a great concert, it's more enjoyable to feel positive, uplifted and energized about your money than it is to have an experience that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Good luck composing your own financial "magic."
