Total Body Wellness: Mom Sets the Standard

Total Body Wellness: Mom Sets the Standard
Moms do it all these days, and healthy meals aren't outside their reach. Our fitness columnist shares some tips to organize your week of healthy choices for the family.

If you're a working mom, chances are your life is as hectic as I-75 at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Most of the time the whole family is depending on you from morning until bedtime. From meals to soccer uniforms, you've got a full plate.

Studies show that women are key decision makers when it comes to household food choices, as well as healthcare decisions. And more doctors are starting to talk about how many conditions previously thought to be genetic are caused by poor lifestyle choices that families practice together.

It's crucial that moms take charge of their own health and the health of their families. Time always will be an issue until the food your family is eating becomes a high priority. Don't let a crowded schedule dictate your health.

My most successful clients take the time over the weekend to plan out meals for the week. They have an idea of what the family is eating every day during the week and typically use the same time to write down a thorough grocery list. If you have a plan for the week's meals as you grocery shop, you won't run into issues midweek.

For the meals at my house, I know that we’re going to have at least one salad for lunch or dinner every day during the week, so I pick a time once a week to chop up all my veggie salad toppings and keep them in a container in the fridge. That way if anyone is knocking on deaths door from hunger, they grab a handful of lettuce, handful of veggies and a shot of dressing. Crisis averted.

Salad dressing is such a sneaky source of garbage in your diet. I've given up on store bought dressing for the most part and make my own. Our go-to dressing at our house is three parts olive oil, one part balsamic vinegar, a small pour of apple cider vinegar and Italian seasoning.

We add the apple cider vinegar because it's wonderful for you, helping to create a more alkaline environment in your body. If you use the Bragg's apple cider vinegar, check out the recipe on the label for their sports drink. Next time you're grabbing Gatorade for soccer practice, mix your kids up the Bragg sports drink recipe instead. It's awesome for you or them, and it doesn't have the sugars sports drinks contain.

My hat goes off to all the working moms. It's amazing how much you get done in a day. Nothing is more important to parents than their child's heath, so with some planning and preparation you can set yourself and your kids up for a lifetime of wellness.
