Engaging Your Kids
In today's world of cell phones, video games and computers, kids need to get away from technology every once in a while. This local discount card helps you get your kids moving for less.

090610SOCIAL.jpgA kid's social life should consist of more than just texts, e-mails and IMs, and16 family-focused and child-centered Northern Kentucky businesses make it easier on your pocketbook to make it happen for your own kids. Those 16 businesses started NKY Kids Connect, a discount card program.

"We're all independent, smaller businesses, and we just wanted to come together and put together some kind of discount group for families, so we made up the discount card," says Elizabeth Hickerson, owner of Little Songbird Music Studio, one of the participating businesses.

Available at all participating locations, this free discount card offers deals on art, karate, laser tag, gymnastics and more. And it's not only available to Northern Kentucky residents. Anyone is welcome to get and use the discount card, no matter the state. 090610SOCIAL2.jpg

"What I really like about the card is that it's all local, family-owned small businesses that really have a hard time competing with some of the bigger names and really have a great product to offer, so it's really worth checking out," Hickerson says.

Hickerson's own business is part of the card, and as the name suggests, the Little Songbird Music Studio helps children's development through music. The studio centers around the Musikgarten curriculum, which encompasses activities from newborns to 9-year-olds. "I really like how serious it is about teaching children music but it keeps it very, very fun for the children," she says. SassyMoma-In-Story-GIF.GIF

While Hickerson offers classes during the day, she also gives working parents a chance to bring their kids into the studio on Tuesday nights with Pajama Time. Parents can bring kids up to 4 years old in their pajamas for some quality family time over music.

"I just think it's so important, for working moms especially who don't get to spend as much time with their kids, to make the time they have really quality time," she says. "So we try to make a program where it's music making as a family, something they're bonding over, and it's something that they can carry through with them for the rest of the week. So they can repeat the activities, and it's something that they'll all cherish together."
