Achieving Shear Genius

Achieving Shear Genius
Beauty doesn't always come naturally, but one local cosmetology school is here to help. Offering cutting edge techniques, this local college of hair design contributes to a more beautiful Queen City.

081610BEAUTY.jpgMichael Moore was destined to design hair. His father owned a barber shop, and at a young age, Moore found himself snipping and trimming just like his dad. So it's no surprise that in 2010, the 30th anniversary of his starting out in the beauty business, Moore now is an accomplished hair designer, educator, and member of the Kentucky Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists.

In his 30 year career, Moore grew an interest in passing his passion to others with Michael's College of Hair Design. After starting out in the Newport Shopping Center in 1982, the college now resides in Florence, Ky., with Mi Salon Spa, also owned by Moore and his wife, Idajean. 0110Fence_INSTORY.gif

"The school's on the lower level, and then our salon and spa are up on the upper level," Moore says. "Basically, that allows us to cover all the bases because we also have a training center also in that building."

As Moore suggests, students learn to cut hair on the lower level, but Michael's College of Hair Design offers more than just cutting techniques. "The most important part of our whole entire company, and to be honest with you, it's the No. 1 problem in every business and everywhere in the whole world, the No. 1 problem is communication," Moore says.

So to help students learn to communicate effectively in both talking and listening to their clients, Michael's College of Hair Design provides hands-on experience with role playing activities. Half the students play the part of the stylist while half play the part of the customer.

With all of the lessons and practice, a full course at the college entails 1,800 hours of training, which can be completed in 10 and a half months. But even after the school's training, Moore and his staff encourage continuing education.

"We bring people in from all over, and we keep our staff current with the best education we can get," Moore says. "We've traveled all over the world. We've taken classes in France and Germany, and we constantly travel. We've been in Spain, and we've traveled as many different places as you can possible think of."
