: You work with Media Latina, but how did you first gain interest in the Latin culture?

Frances Grimes, marketing director with Media Latina: A good friend invited me to Havana Martini [Club] to learn how to Salsa, and that was all it took. I am now hooked on the music, the language and the dance.

Cincy Chic: Media Latina produces Latin events for the Tri-State, but tell Cincy Chic readers a little more about your organization.

Grimes: We produce public and private events and work with the best musicians, dancers and instructors locally and national to bring an authentic experience of the Latin culture to Cincinnati. Media Latina has its own dance team, Salsa Underground who travel to different events nationally representing Cincinnati and our Salsa community. We also produce a Salsa Cruise every year so while enjoying live Latin music and dancing you get to see the great views of Cincinnati from the Ohio River.

Cincy Chic: Your next big event is at the end of this month with the Cincinnati Salsa Festival running from July 29 through Aug. 1. What are some of the highlights of this third annual event?

Grimes: Our music headliner this year is Tito Puente Jr., son of the late Tito "King of Latin Music" Puente, performances by professional dance teams, free dance classes, authentic food and merchandise, dance workshops, and we will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest Salsa class.

Cincy Chic: To keep Cincinnatians up to date with events and information, Media Latina offers a free directory and calendar of events. Tell readers a little more about how they can use this directory.

Grimes: Performers can email their performance information to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You can also contact Herman Recalde at (513) 939-0936 if you have an event you would like us to produce.

Cincy Chic: Aside from Media Latina, what do you do for fun?

Grimes: I am on the board of Gary Burbank's non-profit Play it Forward, so I have the opportunity to attend live performances by great local musicians. I produce a monthly art show at the Malton Gallery, so I spend a lot of time viewing artwork by local artists. I also love photography, so I get to capture great moments on film at all of the events.

Cincy Chic: What do you love most about Cincinnati?

Grimes: I love that Cincinnati is full of so much artistic talent and that I get to be a part of so much of it.
