Express Picks: Get Wild, Have a Blast
Different kinds of excitement await you this week, both indoors and out. Hear a rarely performed operatic gem, sip and taste with the wild things or have a Blast in Hyde Park. Summer is in full gear!
Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (1868)
Rarely performed because of its massive scale, this is Wagner's only comedic opera. Having been in the chorus for the last performance by Cincinnati Opera in 1983, I can bear witness to the astounding outpouring of emotion and appreciation from the audience at the close of a monumental experience. Yes, it's a long sit (five hours of music, plus intermissions), so don't drink too much wine before it starts! Do your homework ahead of time so you can be involved in this charming, clever and moving story.
For this opera, Wagner seemed to step aside from his serious self and delivered a love story of great warmth and humanity, wrapped in a tapestry of colorful characters and gorgeous melodies. Perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity… (also June 26)
