Total Body Wellness: Snack Your Way into Skinny Jeans
Snacking is an important part of good, balanced nutrition. Read on for some tips on how to make healthy, delicious choices and burn fat in the process.

Most people know what a healthy meal looks like, but we still get hungry between meals. And while it might be frustrating at times, it's actually a great thing, as long as you're properly snacking and not loading up on junk food.

Great snacks boost your metabolism. Think of your metabolism as a fire and snacking as the fuel that keeps that fire going, which means burning excess body fat. You wouldn't throw one gigantic log on a fire. Instead you'd start it and keep it going with newspaper, sawdust and kindling. The parallel is this: Your good snack food is the secret ingredient that fuels your fire all day long and keeps your fiery metabolism raging.

We reach for some common items that destroy our metabolism. Below is a list of the bad stuff, with some explanation as to what it is exactly that makes them so bad.

1. Slimfast — loaded with high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils and a bunch of other chemicals that will add fat to your body, not aid in weight loss

2. Rice cakes — nothing but pure refined starch with zero fiber, which breaks down immediately into sugar in your body, spiking insulin and promoting fat storage

3. Protein/energy bars — contain isolated soy protein (virtually unusable by your body), hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup and artificial preservatives — This is essentially a candy bar wearing a different outfit.

4. Diet soda — loaded with artificial sweeteners like NutraSweet or Splenda that do more harm than good, raise the insulin levels in your body and cause you to be hungry and store fat — That does not sound like diet anything to me.

5. Crackers, cookies and chips — full of hydrogenated and trans fats, inflammatory processed omega-6 oils and processed flours — The weight gain is pretty close to instant when you eat these. Yes, we're talking about you, 100-calorie packs.

Here are a few things that you should reach for instead:

1. Dried fruit

2. Sliced fruits and veggies (dipped in hummus instead of ranch)3. Nuts, trail mix

4. Raw bars

5. Or make your own snacks like Power Balls (E-mail me and I will give you my recipe!)

Trader Joe's has a great trail mix that we regularly buy for our home and work, but if you're feeling like you'd like to mix it up, here's a recipe for an awesome trail mix.

Paradise Island

3/4 cup almonds

1/4 cup cherries

1/4 cup walnut pieces

1/4 cup chopped dried mango slices

1/2 teaspoon chile powder (or cayenne pepper)

Toss ingredients in a bowl and mix. Store in an airtight bag or container, keep within arms reach and use generously.

Begin snacking your way to fat loss and better health today. You will lose more body fat, moderate and sustain insulin levels, and not suffer the normal "I'm starving" cravings or energy crashes when your daily workout comes along!

Happy snacking!
