Once a mother, always a mother, and one local yoga studio understands that and embraces it with their prenatal and family yoga classes.

World Peace Yoga & Motion Studio offers classes individualized for the various stages of motherhood. The customization process keeps the needs and the safety of the participants in mind.

"In most yoga classes there would be postures and breathing techniques contraindicated for pregnancy," Owner Anna Ferguson says. "For example, in a prenatal class we would not practice any postures where we are lying down on the abdomen or doing deep twisting or retaining the breath. These are examples of things that would be unsafe to practice while pregnant that are often taught in other yoga classes."

Beyond the safety of the mother and her baby, prenatal yoga alleviates many pregnancy discomforts, as it reduces swelling and increases circulation, flexibility, balance and strength. And it also prepares a woman for childbirth. "A prenatal class is essentially 'training' for the marathon of labor and motherhood," Ferguson says. Just like training to run a marathon, prenatal yoga participants focus on strengthening and stretching muscles in addition to learning how to relax and maintain a positive attitude.

As children grow, the classes at World Peace Yoga & Motion Studio grow too. "Playful Yoga," "Way Fun Yoga" and "Groove-Asana Yoga" provide classes for children ages 3 to 14 plus. And "Vivacious Family Yoga" allows the whole family to practice together.

"We are a family friendly studio and offer a free yoga class every Saturday that is open to all," Ferguson says. This free family class takes place from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. every Saturday. World Peace Yoga & Motion Studio also offers prenatal yoga classes 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday. And coming up from June 5 to 26 is a Kids' Yoga four-week session.
