Body, Mind, Spirit: Simple Yoga Secret
In our fast-paced day of complex electronics, schedules and relationships, it's easy to forget that truth is in simplicity. Learn how the secret to inner peace is just that simple.

The universal principles of yoga teach that everything starts with the foundation, so in each posture that foundation is any body part touching the floor. However, the primary and inner foundation of the practice and life is the breath. Everything begins, builds and expands from the breath. And everything opens and releases with the breath, including stress.

One of the most powerful and simple steps you can take to relieve stress is to practice the simple art of yoga breathing. When you inhale deeply, you draw in more oxygen and prana (life force energy), and these feed our nervous system, brain and cells. When you exhale fully, you rid your body of toxins, open your stretch, and release stress from your mind and body. When you balance your breathing, you promote balance in your mind and body, which results in more feelings of peace and centeredness.

When we find that sense of ease, calm and balance, even when life is fast and full, our true beauty shines out more fully from the inside. Feeling less stress, we are less prone to illness and disease, and our optimal health builds and radiates as well.

You can begin to experiment with your own breathing and its effects. One simple technique is "belly" breathing. Inhale fully so that your belly expands like that of a baby when she breathes. Then exhale slowly, fully and evenly like an ocean wave. To keep the breath flowing evenly, count to 10 (or whatever count works for you) for the inhale and count to the same number for the exhale to maintain evenness in duration.

Below is one of the most powerful yoga breathing techniques. The benefits include balancing both hemispheres of the brain, the mind and the nervous system. The technique also assists in optimal creativity and logical verbal activity. It's called alternate nostril breathing:

1. Close the right nostril with your right thumb, and inhale through the left nostril. Do this to the count of four seconds.

2. Immediately close the left nostril with your right ring finger and, at the same time, remove your thumb from the right nostril and exhale through this nostril. Do this to the count of eight seconds. This completes a half round.

3. Inhale through the right nostril to the count of four seconds. Close the right nostril with your right thumb and exhale thought the left nostril to the count of eight seconds. This completes one full round.

It's hard for us to believe that something so simple, easy and free can be so powerful and effective. It's available every moment, and you can practice yoga breathing anytime and anywhere.

Yoga is about experiencing and exploring how things work for you, so find out what works for you with the 12 breath challenge! At least once a day, every day for 21 days, pause, close your eyes, and take 12 deep breaths using the technique from above and find out the secret power that is available for you anytime.
