Round 'em up to stay in

After a long day in the office, sometimes you want to stay in the refuge of your home instead of heading out again to meet up with your girlfriends. So transform your girls' night out into a girls' night in with these helpful hints that will satisfy both your taste buds and your fashion sense.

Getting all glammed up for a night on the town takes much more time than if you were just staying in. So save yourself the extra hours of primping and put it toward your quality time with the girls as you all hop into comfy clothes to enjoy a girls' night IN.

Yes, a night out can help you unwind after a stressful day (or week), but enjoying your best buds in the comfort of one of your homes can provide a more intimate atmosphere to help you relax. (Plus, you don't have to worry about losing your voice as you scream to be heard.)

You even can enjoy some wine or cocktails and stay safe with a nostalgic slumber party, but to keep the night from being a snooze-fest, try these local options.

Baked to Perfection

After recently moving from Oakley to Downtown, quaint cupcakery Abby Girl Sweets is holding its own in the big city with doubled numbers and continually sold-out stock. And this news isn't just sugar-coated, it's sugar-filled too as each cupcake boasts a quick fix for any sweet tooth.

While the city continues to devour these cupcakes, you can secure some of these confections with call-ahead ordering. As the cupcakery's motto is "Every batch from scratch," you can call three or four days in advance to be sure your order is put on the baking schedule. Then when the day of your girls' night in arrives, just stop by the shop after work for an easy (and delicious) set of refreshments.

Run by a husband-and-wife team who named the shop after their daughter Abby, Abby Girl Sweets offers 11 daily staple flavors in addition to a weekly special. With call-ahead ordering, you can pick and choose which flavors to savor and not worry about a rush for the Red Velvet or a stampede for the Chocolate Supreme.

"You always have our weekly flavors that if, per se, we don't have that particular flavor that you tried two weeks ago but you really liked it, then you can call," Co-owner Andrea Thompson says. So if you're going bananas for that Banana Cupcake with Madagascar Vanilla Bean Frosting, don't go crazy just yet. Thompson and her husband probably can work something out for you.

If you'd like to add a little personalization to your cupcakes, custom orders are welcome. Change the white icing to pink or add some text commemorating your girls' night in. While some cupcakes are a little more difficult to modify, Abby Girl Sweets will work with you to achieve your desired desserts.

Depending on the details of the cupcakes, custom order prices can be as low as the regular prices. More intricate orders will be priced accordingly, though.

Regular pricing for Abby Girl Sweets cupcakes include the single cupcake at $2.75. For six or more cupcakes, they will be $2.50 each. For the die-hard sugar lover, two dozen cupcakes run $50.

Private Access(ories)

Before you pick up your cupcakes and get the party started, be sure to call Angela Stein, owner of The Next Best Thing boutique in Kenwood. She will bring some stylish flair to your private affair by packing up her boutique and bringing the goods to you.

So as you treat yourself to some sweets, you can browse through fun, unique items that you won't see anywhere else. "We only carry like one or two of each handbag, so it's not like having Vera Bradley, and 600 people in Cincinnati have that same purse," Stein says.

And that originality holds true for all of the pieces at The Next Best Thing. Often Stein will wear various pieces of jewelry from her shop and customers will buy them right off her neck, she says. So your girls' night in will give you the chance to catch up with your favorite ladies as you enjoy virtually exclusive access to each design Stein brings.

Despite the specialty involved in the items, Stein maintains low prices to add extra incentive for women. "Truly you could get two purses and four necklaces for 150 bucks from my store," Stein says. So that one-of-a-kind piece won't cost that one-of-a-kind price.

Because The Next Best Thing's five rooms spread over two floors make for quite a packing endeavor for Stein, she asks that the exclusive parties have at least 10 guests. This "restriction" can serve as a benefit, however, because you can get more opinions on whether that funky necklace goes with your favorite shirt or not.

No matter whether you have confectionary delights or fashionable accessories, you can't go wrong with a night with your girlfriends. Check out this week's Cents & Sensibility column for another way to enjoy your gal pals without leaving the house.
