Media Maven: "Invictus" Movie Review
With major industry players in this true-story-gone-Hollywood movie, does this film live up to its cast? Our Media Maven helps you know if this film will surpass expectations or fall short on the field.

"Invictus"

Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Clint Eastwood (Director)

The above credits are all anyone really needs to know about this film because I believe it is the popularity of these three men that will draw people to see this movie.

"Invictus" is a true account of the South African President Nelson Mandela's (Morgan Freeman) attempt to unite political factions in his career. Mandela enters his presidency with a nation divided, both racially and economically at odds. In the midst of apartheid, he believes he can help his people find some commonality in the pursuit of South Africa's rugby team's play in the 1995 Rugby World Cup Championship match.

This film tells a formidable story of human prejudices and hope for change. Rugby Captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) shows a genuine earnestness in wanting to unite this divided nation.

Having said that, this film, while truly noble in its telling, felt more like a documentary. Clint Eastwood did a fine job in presenting a story told in real time all the while incorporating the disparity of South Africa's peoples and the courage it takes to believe in change.

If not for Freeman, Damon and Eastwood, I doubt this film would create little interest.
