Chic Spotlight: Olympic Trainer Mary Lee Tracy
She strives for success and encourages young women to represent Team USA as they go for the gold. Go behind the scenes with this local trainer to learn how you can achieve your perfect 10.

Cincy Chic: You've trained Olympic greats like Amanda Borden and Jaycie Phelps, but how did you get your start in gymnastics?

Mary Lee Tracy, Cincinnati Gymnastics president and USA Olympic trainer: My training started from a need for a job in high school. I loved gymnastics and I LOVED even more to teach. I went to every gymnastics clinic [and] technical seminar and visited all of the top gyms in the country to see how to produce high quality gymnastics.

Cincy Chic: Once you got your start, why did you decide to pursue the career of being a gymnastics coach?

Tracy: I realized early on in life that I was a leader and really enjoyed leading and managing people (kids and adults both). I was also blessed with the gift of teaching. I love planning and organizing and I have an incredible passion for the sport of gymnastics.

Cincy Chic: How does it feel to have gone from the mat yourself to playing a major role in making gymnasts into Olympic athletes?

Tracy: It is such a reward as a teacher/coach to help an athlete reach a personal goal. After watching them work so hard, persevere and make so many sacrifices to pursue a dream, nothing makes me smile more than to be a part of the experience.

Cincy Chic: As this is for our Goal Setting issue, what personal goals have you achieved and how did you get there?

Tracy: My goals have always been more short-term goals. I am an "A" type personality and my focus to get things done is by lists. So if I plan too far in advance, I would need a pretty long pad of paper that probably would not fit in my bag!

I love problem solving and figuring out ways to jump every obstacle that sports/life deals me and my athletes. My only goals in life have been to be the best mom, coach and business owner that I can be. That is what has always motivated me and always will!

Cincy Chic: What advice do you have for Cincy Chic readers who are striving for success?

Tracy: Get up each day with the intention and purpose to move in a direction that will make you happy and your life productive — even if that is making sure you take a day to rest and recover. During those times of not wanting to get out of bed, I have dug deeper to find something that day to look forward to. It is so important to know in your mind and remember daily: "What you think about you will bring about." Think energy, think positive, and smile. It is amazing how simple that is and how quickly it can change your outlook.

Cincy Chic: When you're not in the gym, what do you do for fun?

Tracy: FUN: Time with my daughter, dogs and family! In the winter I love to relax, read and watch movies by the fireplace. In the summer I love the pool and the outdoors, and in between I love a walk with the dogs on a sunny day!

Cincy Chic: What do you love most about Cincinnati?

Tracy: I love Cincinnati because it is a great place to call home and raise a family! I love the weather in Cincinnati because we get to experience all four seasons and none of them last too long that you get tired of them. I love the pace of Midwest living — not too slow and not too fast. I love the Bengals too!
