Followorthy deals on Twitter

In today's world, your hottest deals depend on who you follow. Continue to clip your coupons, but look to these local companies that have embraced social media. Learn how you can score their unbeatable online-exclusive sales and discounts with just a couple clicks and tweets.

The world is abuzz with Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites, but to really take advantage of these opportunities, you must know who makes a great connection. Whether it's who you follow, your friend, or your contact, the person (or business) behind the profile makes a difference in whether you will benefit from your social media adventures. So Cincy Chic tapped into Twitter to find out the who's who of deals and discounts and offer a behind-the-scenes look at it all.


The Method behind the Messages

Hair & Body Works Salon & Wellness Center stands out from the crowd in consistency and creativity. Using the Twitter handle @hairbodyworks, this salon and spa offers a different deal with almost every tweet.



In addition to offering you money-saving opportunities, these 140-characters-or-fewer posts offer a little humor. "Today only! It’s the Pits!: Free Right Underarm Wax with any Left Underarm Wax Value. Call 513-871-222 for an appt.," one of their tweets read. The company has had a little fun with brunette vs. blonde offers for color treatments, and for a more encouraging tweet, Hair & Body Works said, "Twitter Deal: Lighten Up! 25% off Highlights Tomorrow! Call 513-871-2222."


Hair & Body Works offers deals on everything from hair cuts to color treatments to manicures to massages to combination packages, but why the move into the Twitterverse to offer deals? It all started when owners Debrah Englert and Mary Sowers decided that, after 30 years in the business and more than 10 years at Hair & Body Works, they didn't want to just be "the best kept secret in town," as many of their clients referred to them. They wanted to halt the hush and spread the word to eliminate those middle words so that they simply would be "the best in town."


To achieve their goal, the ladies talked with publicist Micah Paldino — owner of PB&J Public Relations, Branding & Jabber — who directed them to Twitter. Englert and Sowers adopted the advice because 1) Twitter offers a cheap, accessible way to reach people and 2) Twitter users made for a better match to the salon and spa's target market than the members of other social media sites.


Most of the company's Twitter deals, like many other Twitter offers, come with a short timeframe for when customers can take advantage of them. This results from the process of it all because the deals generally stem from open spots in a day's schedule. "Mary and I look at the business operations and areas inside the facility that we want to promote and where we have the team members to service the client," Englert says. The deals also come with a "mention Twitter" clause to help Englert and Sowers keep track of the social medium's effectiveness.


More Twitter Deals


Beyond Hair & Body Works, several other local companies tweet their way to customer discounts. Generally, look for your favorite salon and spa or boutique to offer the deals. Bars and restaurants also have been known to dole out the discounts online, but stick with locally-owned venues to get more return on the tweets.


Trend Boutique uses both Facebook and Twitter for double-duty deals. Using the Twitter handle @trendcincinnati, the boutique updates customers on store-wide sales in addition to their online-exclusive specials: "Many new markdowns this week! Plus, mention facebook or twitter and get 10% off regularly priced items,..."


The Woodhouse Day Spa uses the Twitter handle @WoodhouseSpa to provide customers with up-to-the-minute savings. This salon and spa also has some fun with its tweets with discounts like the one that came right before the big snow fall: "Oh and if your [sic] a teacher you'll get 25% off if it's a snow day. Just mention Twitter."


Missy and Jack serves as another Twittering boutique, using the Twitter handle @missyandjack. More often than not, the shop's deals extend to anyone who comes in the store and just keep Twitter followers in the know, but the store has provided some exclusives for their followers as well. Recently, Missy and Jack let followers know about the cost-cutting news of the boutique: "New markdowns have been taken throughout the store...50% OFF...stock up and save!!!"


Salon Bastille shows another way to save with their Twitter updates. Using the handle @Salon_Bastille, the salon directed readers to another local cost-cutting resource: "Check us out on where you can purchase Gift Certificates to the salon for 1/2 off. "


Just as Salon Bastille mentioned, offers another way to save, and the company's Twitter account (@CincySavers) keeps you up to date with deals. (Check out this week's social story to learn more.) But @CincySavers isn't the only handle that will provide you with deals around town. Also look to @cincy_deals, @KrogerDeals, @cincyrewards and @BuyCincy for more ways to save in Cincinnati.
