Upping the WOW Factor
Take your house's curb appeal to new heights with this local mother and son who have made over their careers so that they can make over your house. Learn how this Tri-State team keeps the city blooming with possibilities.

Windows turn a box into a house. The glass breathes life into the house with fresh, natural light and scenic views. The transparent panes allow the warm feeling of "home" to touch passersby. As your windows work their magic, one local mother-son team works to enhance the experience.

Sue and Bret Schneider run WOW Windowboxes to accent the natural beauty of windows with the natural beauty of flowers and other plants.

Sue Schneider started the business in 2007 after a frustrating attempt to find window boxes for her own house. When she finally found the boxes, installation wasn't an option. Once the boxes were installed, automatic watering wasn't part of the equation (even in the multi-story window boxes). But instead of giving in to disappointment, Sue Schneider made it her mission to provide a complete window box service.

Now, she and her son work together to provide custom-made and custom-colored window boxes made of cellular PVC to keep the boxes from rotting, splitting, cracking or warping. To make use of each box's durability, WOW Windowboxes provides year-round service to change the plants. And to make life easier between plantings, WOW Windowboxes installs an automatic watering system so that customers can enjoy their blooms without worrying about constant watering.

As for the year-round planting service, WOW Windowboxes works with customers to determine what plants will work with their individual needs. With the automatic watering system, the Schneiders guarantee the plants will bloom or they will replace them free of charge. While the watering system isn't involved, the guarantee is strongest with winter plantings as they come with artificial greens and berries. Ornaments bring some holiday cheer, and the extra service to take those ornaments down after the holidays is included in the winter planting price.

While WOW Windowboxes serves as a 24-hour job for Sue and Bret Schneider, the work is worth the payoffs, Bret Schneider says. After coming from corporate America, Bret Schneider enjoys a more positive work experience where negative project managers have been replaced by hugging customers "almost giddy with excitement," he says.
