Ask Patty: Giving Back
What’s the No. 1 way to feel good this holiday season? Start by giving back! Our relationship expert has some creative ways to do just that and build a stronger relationship with your community.

" My husband and I would like to get more involved when it comes to giving back to the community. I've researched your company and noticed that you do a lot in the way of philanthropy. What are some creative ways I can get involved and give back to the community of Cincinnati?"

— Melissa (Hyde Park, Ohio)

Patty:

Volunteering your time and talents is not only a good thing to do, but it also feels good! Whether your contribution consists of a few hours after work, an entire day, or months or years at a time, volunteering fulfills an important need to give back to your community.

I chose to give back to the community with the launch of The Patty Brisben Foundation in 2006, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization which funds research and educational outreach programs to improve the quality of women’s health. My successes within my company, Pure Romance, have given me the opportunity to give back to the women who continue to touch my life. For more information, please visit PattyBrisbenFoundation.org.

Here are some other great ways you can give back to the community:

Donate Clothing

Do you have clothes that you no longer wear? Consider donating them to a charity like Goodwill or The Salvation Army. These organizations rely heavily on the donation of goods for their resale shops, the proceeds from which fund programs ranging from food pantries to disaster relief.

Donate Time

There is an even more overwhelming need for volunteers over the holiday season. Let Volunteer Match help you find the organization that needs your help. From food banks to community gardens, this site allows you to pick a cause and organization that is important to you.

Get Active

Charity walks benefit the cause, the community and your body. Find a cause that fits with you and start walking!

Breast cancer: Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Women's Health: Patty Brisben Foundation

Mental illness: National Alliance on Mental Illness

Leukemia and lymphoma: Team in Training

Diabetes: StepOut

Arthritis: Arthritis Foundation

Asthma: American Lung Association

Cancer: American Cancer Society

Click to Donate

You even can give back to the community by simply engaging in activities that you would normally participate in during a typical day. If you currently use a search engine like Yahoo! or Google, switch to GoodSearch.com. GoodSearch.com is powered by Yahoo!, so you’ll get the same great results for your queries, plus the charity of your choice receives a donation every time you search. Each time you use GoodSearch.com, a little more than a penny is earned for the organization. Visit GoodSearch.com to start donating today!

Donate Blood

Every day, people like you make a difference in Greater Cincinnati by sharing their good health. They do it by the simple act of giving blood. For locations, visit Hoxworth Blood Center's location page.

And, of course, you can always donate cash. Increase the value of your donation by picking one or two charities whose efforts you really support, and donate the bulk of money there. That way, you are putting your money where you think it will accomplish the most.

Whatever you decide, always remember: By helping others, you are not only helping your community, but you also will feel more rewarded in the process.

January is National Mentoring Month. Mentoring is a wonderful way to put another caring adult in a young person's life. Consider supporting the community by mentoring a child through Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. www.cycyouth.org
