Tipping Point
Salon and spa services restore your sense of mind, but some local service providers ask you to say thanks by giving, not tipping. See how your next salon service can be a philanthropic opportunity.

You tip your server. You tip your driver. You tip your stylist. Your gratuity has come to be expected, but Aveda Fredric's Institute turns the tables on the tipping cycle.

This cosmetology school provides customers with salon and spa experiences at the hands of the students, who are trained extensively in teamwork and customer service. To nurture these principles, the school maintains a non-tipping environment. This allows students to work together to serve their customers without any thoughts of who will get the tip at the end of the day. "[The non-tipping environment] takes all the question out, and it's all about working together and helping each other out," Co-owner Julie Holzberger says.

And the lack of tips means far from a lack of service. "We are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen," Holzberger says, so students learn the delivery of service based on Aveda's 10 points of difference. These 10 points provide students with a start-to-finish approach for creating the best experience for their guests.

Part of the delivery of service includes "moments of wellness," Holzberger says. So each customer will receive a shoulder and scalp massage, a mini-facial, and a makeup touch-up complimentary with their scheduled service.

After such a positive experience, many customers still would like to show their appreciation with gratuity. As the Aveda staff understands this, customers are encouraged to satisfy their desire to give back through a donation to the student education fund. This fund provides students with experiences outside the regular classroom. From guest speakers to out-of-town competitions, educational opportunities constantly present themselves to the students, and the fund helps provide the financial assistance students need to answer the door when an opportunity knocks.

Two months out of the year, the students sacrifice the donations for their fund to support other organizations. April donations celebrate Earth Month as they go to support environmental organizations, and October donations help Aveda's global campaign against breast cancer.
