Ice to Meet You The holiday parties and feasts mixed with the colder weather can be a recipe for weight gain, but you can add this local club to the equation to come up with much better results. ![]() Living in a city with all four seasons definitely has its benefits: the trees budding in spring, the warm sun shining in summer, the leaves catching fire in fall and the snow blanketing the city in winter. Unfortunately, those same four seasons also have their drawbacks, particularly the gray skies and dreary weather that accompanies fall and winter.
Mike Colette, a transplant from the East Coast to the East Side, saw the problem and wanted to offer a solution. As he's far from a weatherman, Colette decided to offer a place of retreat from the fall and winter that also offered new experiences and activities. So with countless hours and dollars of support and help from the community, he started the Indian Hill Winter Club (IHWC).
The IHWC offers members and their families a chance to enjoy a fitness club and club house all in one. The club house side of the facility offers members a chance to relax in the Main Hearth Room with a ski-lodge feel and cozy fireplace. Members also can take advantage of the Club Room that offers big screen TVs, adult beverages and the opportunity to rent the room for meetings and events.
As far as the fitness side goes, IHWC offers the usual equipment, personal training, clinics and classes as many gyms, but the club takes fitness a little further. It's not called a winter club for nothing!
The IHWC provides a full-size ice rink for a more unique way to fit exercise into your day. "Because skating requires an erect posture and a certain measure of control, participation in the sport has been found to contribute to better breathing, improved circulation, and balance, better posture and overall strength," according to the IHWC Web site.
To take part in this beneficial activity, club members and their families can enjoy a quick skate around the rink for a more leisurely exercise. As the opportunity to ice skate was one of Colette's top priorities, the club offers "Learn to Skate" classes. To up their icy game, members can participate in ice sports offered at the IHWC. From figure skating to youth and adult hockey to broomball, members can take on a more competitive approach to their workouts.
Open all year round, the club picks up its pace for fall and winter when the ice rink is open. In order to allow members full use of the facilities, the IHWC limits its membership to 450 families. Other families can include themselves on a waiting list, and they will be invited to the major club events. For more membership information, e-mail membership@ihwinterclub.com.
