Cincy Chic
: You have two blogs: Good Things Going around Cincinnati and My Sidekick and Me. So how did you first get into the blogosphere?

Blogger Lisa Desatnik: My first blog is my Good Things blog. Writing and storytelling have always been outlets of self expression for me. I remember as a child sitting with my dad in front of a painting describing its tale. I also remember [writing] my first and only book about "pencil land." My mom was so proud that she sent it to a publisher, and we actually heard back.

I began blogging when I was looking for an outlet to share a little bit about my perspective on the world around me in hopes of inspiring others. I thought a blog would be a fun way of doing that in my own personal way.

Cincy Chic: While you gain inspiration for My Sidekick and Me from your pets and other animals, where do you find inspiration for Good Things?

Desatnik: You know, our perspective on life is really a reflection of our past circumstances. I’m really not any different than most other people in that regard. I’ve faced and triumphed over challenges and painful circumstances. I know what it feels like to be excluded, to be hurt by words, to have a sense of failure. I’ve overcome a debilitating injury, almost lost my mom and held my dad when he collapsed in my arms. I’ve also experienced the beauty in having a close family, friendship and love; witnessed the power of compassion; and realized the high of knowing I succeeded.

This is my classroom. It has given me strength and empathy. It has taught me many important lessons like cherishing what I have, living for each day, giving unconditionally when I can, and making sure people who matter to me know it.

Good Things is a natural extension of my outlook on life and those around me who have and continue to influence it. It seems the older I get and the more I experience, the more I am able to appreciate all that is meaningful. I really wanted to capture that in my blog. It is my hope that people who visit will feel uplifted.

Cincy Chic: How has blogging impacted you?

Desatnik: My Sidekick and Me is about pets. I have three birds, and I started learning about the use of positive reinforcement in behavior management as a result of working through an issue with Barnaby. I’ve seen the transformation in their love of learning and in our relationship as a result, and it has carried over into teaching other animals (and owners) as well. There is still such a misunderstanding about the use of punishment and how it affects behavior that I’ve become very passionate about educating others. That was my biggest motivator for starting My Sidekick and Me, however, I also wanted to use it as a vehicle for sharing positive stories of people and their non-human companions.

I really blog more for personal reasons than professional. Both of my blogs cover topics I’m very passionate about. I get a lot of satisfaction from sharing them with others. I have to say the ultimate reward is when people tell me they are inspired by what I have to say. It’s one of the ways I feel I’m giving back and helping to make a difference.

Cincy Chic: From your perspective, what importance do blogs have in today's society, and how has that changed since the inception of blogs?

Desatnik: I see blogs as a growing trend in the social media environment being used for personal expression, relationship building, news sharing and as part of integrated business strategies. Blogs are no longer just tools for writing personal diaries, although I think and hope there will always be a place for that. Especially with the shrinking traditional media and increasingly busy schedules, more and more people are turning to the Internet as a means of communication.

Cincy Chic: Where do you see blogs going in the future?

Desatnik: The blogosphere is evolving and growing all the time. What once were static boards of text have emerged into interactive sites, and I see that continuing to expand. Blogs will be used more and more as ways of disseminating news, interacting with customers or supporters, and as Web sites.

Cincy Chic: When you're not updating the world on your pets and your city, what do you like to do for fun?

Desatnik: Wow, there are so many things I like to do. I love to salsa dance. I also like to go for long walks, take in festivals or events, try area restaurants, and garden. Spending time with family and friends would be at the top of the list.

Cincy Chic: What is your favorite thing about Cincinnati?

Desatnik: I’ve grown up in Cincinnati, and I love it here. Our Fountain Square has become such an energetic hub of activity. However, we also have so many fun and wonderful places to see and experience. Of course, I really like our Cincinnati Zoo. I think, though, what I like most of all is the people here who have touched my life in very positive ways.
