Securing Your Job
When it comes to workplace safety, the tanking job market is more dangerous than loony co-workers. See how you can handle the former, and protect yourself against the latter.

This article is about safety in the workplace, but it has nothing to do with fire drills or keeping your fingers away from the stapler. It's not about your safety at all. It's all about your job.

In today's market, most people fit into at least one of two categories: They're searching for a job, or they're trying to maintain their current employment status. With this in mind, Tasha Riekstins decided to bring Pink Slip Parties to Greater Cincinnati and is now the event coordinator for the parties.

Pink Slip Parties focus on providing unemployed men and women with important knowledge and tools needed to land a job in their desired field. Those who are employed still can benefit from the parties if they want to make themselves indispensible to their employers.

"It's definitely not the first of its kind, and it won't be the last of its kind," Riekstins says. New York City's Alison Heming has been playing host to Pink Slip Parties since the 1990s' dot-com bust. After Heming appeared on the "Today" show, Riekstins contacted her about throwing the parties. To Riekstins' surprise, Heming wrote back and gave her advice.

Riekstins started the ball rolling, and Cincinnati celebrated its first Pink Slip Party June 4 at Bronte Bistro in the Cincinnati Joseph-Beth Booksellers. Party goers enjoyed a pep talk for coming, followed by volunteer guest speaker Joe Self, owner of Job Doctors, who discussed professional branding. With a flood of applicants or looming layoffs, standing out from the pack can make a difference in securing a job, Riekstins says.

After Self's talk, guests stood up one at a time to say their name, field and dream job, which came in handy in the speed networking section of the party. Just like speed dating, participants met with each other one-on-one to make connections. "Nobody met fewer than four connections," Riekstins says.

Another benefit of the party came through Tender Touch Photography, who offered free headshots on the spot. "I think that's a service that people never get around to doing, but it's important to do it," Riekstins says.

The next Pink Slip Party will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. July 9 at the Bronte Bistro. Only 50 percent of first-party attendees will be able to come to the second party to keep the meetings fresh and different. Also, the second party will feature different vendors and speakers.

To take advantage of the July 9 event, e-mail Riekstins, but just like in the job market, you have to act quickly. The first party was such a hit that Riekstins had to turn away some guests, but she is reserving spots specifically for Cincy Chic readers for the July 9 event. Make sure to mention that you heard about the Pink Slip Parties from Cincy Chic to better your chances of securing a spot that will help you secure your job.
