A Business-Booming Brunch Mother's Day means brunch at the Phoenix for many local families. We talk to the person who's made this tradition possible since its inception.
There's something oh-so-dignified about brunch. It brings to mind a slow-paced, unhurried treat with friends or family that leaves you feeling satisfied and your tummy full. And it's extra special at The Phoenix restaurant downtown where it's served just twice annually, and May 10 is one of those times this year for Mother's Day.
That's when the fine dining eatery will host its annual meal that honors the women who touch our lives. It's in its second year and about 300 people attend. The event draws both new and returning customers, says The Phoenix General Manager Kent Vandersall, who has been managing the Mother's Day brunch since its inception.
"It is an excellent source of revenue for us. I would guess that at least a third of them are loyal restaurant customers who dine with us frequently," he says. Vandersall has been involved with the event both years.
The event attracts so many people because of its rarity, he added.
"We only do a brunch on Easter Sunday and Mother's Day. We do it on these days because there is great demand for dining out on these days. Also, because
The Mother's Day brunch is Sunday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost is $29 for adults and $19 for children ages 5 to 12, and gratuity is not included. Children four and younger eat for free. Reservations are required, and you can make them by calling (513) 721-8901.
Adding to the charm is that The Phoenix building, 812 Race Street, is one of the city's treasured historical landmarks. It's a former gentlemen's club built in 1893 by renowned architect, Samuel Hannaford, who also designed Music Hall and Cincinnati City Hall. The restaurant opened there in 1988 after renovations. The building's signature white, winding marble grand staircase is original to the building and only enhances the feeling of being part of something special.
"Because we set the brunch on the first floor at the base of the staircase, it is truly a setting that is one-of-a-kind. We hope that people come here on Mother's Day because of the combination of good food that's fairly priced, and served in such a wonderful setting," Vandersall says. "It's classy and elegant without being stuffy. It works for the whole family, while making Mom feel quite special."
Diners also will get a glimpse of how the great food is prepared.
"We cook waffles and omelets to order in front of the guest, and we also have a carver station where the chef slices prime rib and honey glazed ham," Vandersall says. "We've found that the public enjoys the interaction with our cooks as the food is prepared."
