Chic Spotlight: Power of the Purse's Kelley Neu
Cincy Chic: What is the concept behind "Power of the Purse"? Kelley Neu: Over the last 30 years we have seen women become increasingly involved in philanthropic issues within their communities and throughout the world. Yet, interestingly, some women don't see themselves as philanthropists despite their growing track record of giving. Others long to give more but need answers to questions about their own financial security and their giving potential.
Seton High School is in a unique position to host conversations about financial self-sufficiency and philanthropic giving within our community of women. We are excited to announce the development of a year-long initiative designed to answer women's questions regarding financial security, financial planning tools and philanthropic values, whatever their ages.
This new initiative will be appropriately named "Power of the Purse." It will include a series of educational programs and events designed to help women assess their own financial security. It will challenge women to create for themselves a philanthropic vision through which they find satisfaction in supporting the projects about which they are most passionate.
Cincy Chic: What happens at these events, and who do they benefit? Neu: The kick-off event for the Power of the Purse initiative was held on January 15. The event included both a silent and oral auction of purses, food, music and fun. Proceeds from the evening benefited the Seton High School technology initiative, which includes our new student Tablet PC program. The event was a great success with more than 350 women attending. The evening brought women together for a positive collaboration to benefit the young women of Seton High School.
On June 17 Seton will host a luncheon entitled "How Powerful is your Purse?" The lunch will be followed by a presentation on estate planning by Mary Burns of Johnson Investment Counsel. The goal is to provide women with the knowledge and tools necessary to successfully begin the estate planning process by helping them identify their personal goals.
On the evening of September 23 Seton will host "You and Your Money." The evening will feature multiple mini-courses on financial issues facing women today. Our topics will include saving for college tuition, life insurance, using credit properly, financial planning, buying a home and other relevant financial issues. The goal is to provide educational support to promote financial self-sufficiency.
Cincy Chic: Whose idea was it? Neu: The initiative was developed by me, Kelley Neu. I'm the Development Manager of Seton High School. Having a strong history of educating women, I felt that Seton High School was uniquely positioned to present women with the educational tools necessary to create for themselves a solid financial foundation. My hope is that this initiative will help educate and empower women of all ages.
Cincy Chic: When and where is your next one? Neu: June 17 - Luncheon to be held at Seton High
September 23 - Mini-Course Night to be held at Seton High School
Cincy Chic: Who can come to these kinds of events? Neu: The events are open to all women. For information contact me at 513-471-2600 ext. #188.
Cincy Chic: How much do you raise and what are some of the tangible things Seton has been able to do because of this event? Neu: The initiative is not designed as a fund raiser. There will be a small fee to attend the luncheon and mini-course night evening in order to cover the cost associated with presenting the events. The Girls' Night Out event did raise more than $10 thousand for Seton's technology program. We did use that event to raise funds in order to demonstrate the collaborative power of women.
Cincy Chic: About how many people come, and what kinds of designers are featured? Neu: At our January event we had more than 350 women in attendance. The oral auction included purses by Kate Spade, Coach, Fossil, etc. We featured a purse by local designer Missy DeGroot.
Cincy Chic: What's your favorite purse? Neu: Hard to say - I have always loved Coach purses, but I also love Kate Spade!
Cincy Chic: What's your favorite thing about Cincinnati? Neu: I love Cincinnati because it is a large enough city to offer such things as professional sports, theaters, museums, etc. but small enough to retain that small-town community feel.
