Who is that DAAP Student in the Window?
Find out how downtown pedestrians are able to literally get a window into the world of design thanks to Macy's. 

Unless you're in Amsterdam, you don't really associate people with window displays. But that's changing thanks to a partnership between Macy's and the University of Cincinnati's internationally recognized College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) program.

These two design moguls are joining forces to give deserving DAAP students limelight for all downtown dwellers to see. "The partnership started with Macy's sponsorship of last year's DAAP fashion show," says Char Lauman, visual manager for Macy's Downtown Fountain Place. "And in June last year, we launched this opportunity to showcase students' work in our windows."

The way it works is Macy's allots two 8'x10' windows each quarter. Nancy Brinker, DAAP's assistant director academic adjunct instructor, carefully selects the students, and those "chosen ones" deck out those windows to their liking. For example, the last display featured recycled garments and the student re-purposed items ranging from baseballs to Beanie Babies.

"The windows are to express the student and their design experience," says Lauman. "The backdrop of each window says 'Macy's Salutes Rising Stars of Fashion' and the student's name is printed on the window for everyone to see."

Once the display is erected, the student comes to the downtown store - many times with their family - and has a photoshoot with their window for their portfolio. "The students are always so appreciative," says Lauman. "It's such a big deal for the students to be showcased like this. I think it's wonderful." It's an especially big deal since Macy's is headquartered in Cincinnati, she adds.

Turns out, students aren't the only ones appreciating it. Lauman says Macy's customers also take notice. "People come into the store asking about it. They love it!"

So, don't miss this window of opportunity to see DAAP designs on display for yourself. Two new window designs go up this week on the Skywalk across from Palomino.
