Media Maven: “Sex and the City” Movie Review
Is it fashion forward or too fashion in-your-face? Our Media Maven offers her own insight into “Sex and the City,” the film women across the nation have anticipated.
Sex and the City

This long awaited movie is for the long-standing, diehard fans of the TV series of the same name. “Sex and the City,” the film, has about as much depth as a two-toned nail polish manicure and a plot that is so lightweight it can only be held down by the more than 400 costume changes that adorn the Girls: Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte.
Am I complaining? Am I suggesting that it is one huge montage of fashion trends and styles with a little story on the side? Actually, no. Never having watched the TV show, I found this film entertaining. With the use of the voiceover technique, our lead Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) introduces the characters for those of us who did not know them.
She also updates viewers as to where each character is in their lives. Samantha (Kim Catrell), the sex kitten, is living on the opposite coast. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is living in Brooklyn. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is living in maternal bliss as a mother and wife, and Carrie is still living the life of a New York magazine writer.
All of the old characters unite for this reunion. So devotees will enjoy seeing ‘Smith’ Jerrod (Jason Lewis), Steve (David Eigenberg), Harry (Evan Handler) and Big (Chris Noth), the beloved male counterparts from the original series. But the main testosterone award goes to a one Gilles Marini, a French actor who did not blink an eye when asked about his gorging, gorgeous physique that was so sensually exposed. In the interview he said, “I don’t want to be cocky but the best part about me is my personality, not my butt.”
We’ll let him think that if he wants and you can decide for yourself if you go see “Sex and the City.” Be aware: it is a fluff movie that is low on perspicacity but high on fashion and fun.
