The WU May 8-10
(Thursday, May 07 2009) Written by Liz Wu
Written by Liz Wu, on 07-05-2009 23:27

The Weekend Update

May 8-10, 2009

Featured Artist: Marcelina Robledo!

Visit her website here.

Marcelina Robledo is a woman of many hats. Or, perhaps more accurately, many shoes.

Robledo, 38, has walked the road less traveled, a collection of winding paths that has led her to her present place in life. She is a self-starter who is constantly reinventing herself, rolling with life's punches and taking risks. Currently, Robledo is an independent filmmaker and founder/owner of Spunky Jump, a local video production company that recently celebrated its first birthday. She also runs Art House Essentials, a platform for independent film that partners once a month at UC's Main Street Cinema. Marcelina was featured in this week's CityBeat, as part of the women's issue.
To learn more about this talented female film-maker, click here.

Friday May 8: Pecha Kucha Night

Pecha Kucha is a global phenomenon that resembles a cross between a haiku-style elevator speech and intense performance art. The word Pecha Kucha derives from the Japanese word for "chit-chat" and involves a strict presentation format of 20 images with 20 seconds to explain each image. This amounts to a six-minute-and-40-second edge of your seat experience as the speaker races the clock to present their ideas with brevity and style. The first Pecha Kucha event in Cincinnati is happening on Friday, May 8 and will feature designers, architects, artists, sculptors, poets, photographers & philosophers. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, 1212 Jackson St. Presentations last from 6:30-8 p.m. with discussion continuing at Courtyard Cafe from 8-10:30 p.m. Live music begins at 10:30. $10.
For more information, click here.

Saturday May 9: Music, Pizza and Beer with Liz Wu and Brian Deyo

Hebron Brewing Company (HBC) is a new microbrewery in Hebron KY.  HBC offers a full menu from Stone Oven Pizzeria, which is located next door.  Offering a wide variety of beer - 10 on tap, and about 20 different kinds of bottles – Hebron Brewing also has a full bar (spirits) and wine.  It is non-smoking with 4 HD TVs, tall tables and an urban-look and feel.  Live Music every Friday and Saturday night.

This Saturday,
Liz Wu and Brian Deyo will be hitting all the old favorites, from Jazz Standards to Classic Rock! Come on out for a cold brew, a fresh-made pizza and a great time!

Hebron Brewing Company is located at 2030 Northside Drive Hebron, KY 41048 in the strip plaza behind the BP Gas Station.
For more info on HBC, click here.

Sunday May 10: An Artful Mother's Day

Last call - to see Matthew Shelton's gorgeous lightboxes. Closing exhibit on Sunday, May 10 from 6-9 p.m. A great place to take your mother, or get her a special gift (*wink-wink*). Along with refreshments, take in the lovely sounds of Shelton's band,
The Picnic.

To view a video on the process of making lightboxes, click here.

The exhibit closes at Gallerie Zaum, 811 Monmouth Street 859-441-3838. For more info, click here.

For a more detailed event listing, click here to subscribe to the Zeit Insider!

FULL SPECTRUM CALL TO VOLUNTEERS

If you'd like to get involved with some great arts events, there is a fantastic opportunity to do so with FULL SPECTRUM. This is going to be a series of large-scale, multi-media arts events in Covington every weekend in October. There will be everything from historic tours to juried art exhibits to a World Music festival to a film festival to a haunted art house and a zombie pub crawl. To learn more, please show up at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 at the Covington Enterprise Center at 7th and Madison in Covington. Snacks and fresh ideas will be provided. If you can not attend but would like to volunteer for FULL SPECTRUM, please contact Natalie Bowers at 859-292-2322.

Shhhhh Restaurant opens May 15!

It's been very quiet, but the word is starting to get out - a new full service restaurant, complete with coffeeshop/deli and bar/Jazz club is opening next week at 5915 Hamilton Ave.

Their specialties are Creole cuisine and seafood - they'll be serving Louisiana Po' Boy sandwiches in the deli as well as top notch fish, gumbo and jambalaya in the restaurant. They will also be featuring live music at night.

To receive updates on their grand opening,
please join their e-list!

The WU May 1-3
(Thursday, April 30 2009) Written by Liz Wu
Written by Liz Wu, on 30-04-2009 21:44

The Weekend Update May 1-3, 2009

Featured Artists: The Catacoustic Consort

The Catacoustic Consort presents a variety of vocal and instrumental music from Renaissance chamber music to Baroque opera, with the intent of recreating the sound of the music when it was originally performed. The music is performed on period instruments such as the viola da gamba, theorbo, organ, harpsichord, Baroque guitar, and lute. In addition to a historically informed approach to performing music, Catacoustic is dedicated to approaching music with an understanding of the life and times of when it was originally played, including an informed humanities presentation to accompany its programs. Some of the composers of early music include J.S. Bach, William Byrd, Giulio Caccini, and Boismortier. The Catacoustic Consort is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Visit their website here.

Friday May 1: First Friday Art Extravaganza!

Every first Friday of the month features a veritable smorgasborg of art. Covington hosts its Gallery Hop, Bellevue shops stay open late on Fairfield Ave with special offers ... and this month, Essex Art Studios is opening its doors for its quarterly open house. You can't go wrong with any of these great events - the tough part is choosing which one to attend. The hours are generally from 6-9 p.m. (though Essex goes until 11) and all events are free!

This month, Covington's Gallery Hop includes the following participating venues: Bean Haus Coffee Shop, Community Action Gallery, Julie's Inspiration Consignment Shoppe, Keystone Bar & Grill, MarX Gallery, The Morning Glory Bed & Breakfast, Motch Jewelers, Nordheim Gallery, Passionate Arts Center, Pike Street Café, Rising Star Studios and Encore!

Shop Bellevue has a flower theme this month, with a colorful gift for those who stroll down beautiful historic Fairfield Ave.

Essex Studios, which houses hundreds of artists, is a great place to see not only unique works of art, but to also meet their creators. This event happens on both Friday and Saturday.

Saturday May 2: College Movie Festival

Like movies? Like LOTS of movies? This Saturday, you can see 17 short films by up-and-coming filmmakers for $6 at The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center. The screening features the work of student teams and culminates with an awards ceremony. It's a film buffet at the cost of a matinee! 3-7 p.m. at The Carnegie. For more info, click here.

Sunday May 3: Let Them Eat Cupcakes

You can have your cupcakes and eat them with champagne too at this fun, informal fundraiser for the Catacoustic Consort's new CD of music for the pardessus de viole, entitled "The Secret of the Muse!"

Help preserve living music history and support a local Baroque band by dressing in your best Renaissance-themed finery, dining on gourmet cupcakes from Maribelle Cakery and sipping champagne. There will be a special musical performance by Annalisa Pappanno and Young Mi.

There will also be a silent auction of great items, such as massage gift certificates, architectural consulting from Robert Sala, Interior Design from Clossens designer Erin Lombardi and much more. 3-5 p.m. Sunday May 3. $25 + donation for adults and $10 for children. Bring some $1s and $5s for special games and contests, and your check book for the auction. 4319 Haight Ave. For more info, click here.

Upcoming:

Shhhhh Restaurant opens May 15!

It's been very quiet, but the word is starting to get out - a new full service restaurant, complete with coffeeshop/deli and bar/Jazz club is opening soon at 5915 Hamilton Ave.

Their specialties are Creole cuisine and seafood - they'll be serving Louisiana Po' Boy sandwiches in the deli as well as top notch fish, gumbo and jambalaya in the restaurant. They will also be featuring live music at night.

The Weekend Update

The Noyse Merchants rock out the Pop music of Ye Olden Days. They specialize in Medieval and Renaissance music as well as music from the early Baroque. Their repertoire includes music from the Middle Ages, the Crusades, and from early Ireland, Scotland and England -- essentially popular music from previous centuries. If you would like to hear for yourself, you can fill your goblet at The Northside Tavern this Sunday at 7 p.m. and hear the "Top 40" charts of King Arthur's day. Sliding scale $5-10.

Instrumentation:

This will be a big weekend for local Jazz fans, with a great Latin Jazz show at the Blue Wisp on Friday, followed by an old-style straight-ahead live recording session on Saturday at The Grenwich.

A little-known but very interesting fact for local Jazz enthusiasts is that CCM's Jazz Department regularly brings in extremely high-caliber performers to play and lecture at the university ... and they often end up also playing at The Blue Wisp. This weekend, thanks to CCM and The Blue Wisp, audiences are in for a treat: The Roland Vazquez Sextet. Vazquez is an extremely accomplished drummer and composer, and is joined by a group of fantastic local musicians, as well as Michael Spiro, a well-known percussionist.

Spiro will kick off the night on Friday April 24, with a Latin Percussion workshop (for hand percussionists) at 5 p.m. The cost of the workshop is $10 and reservations should be made to Bobby Sharp at 513-312-7637.

Later, the Roland Vazquez Sextet will take the stage, starting at 8:30 p.m. This ensemble will feature Roland Vazquez on drums, Michael Spiro on Latin Percussion, Bill Jackson on bass, Jim Connerly on piano, Rusty Burge on vibraphone and Rick VanMatre on sax/flute at The Blue Wisp, 318 E 8th. $15. Show repeats on Saturday also.

Saturday April 25

Bowl and Bunns at The Grenwich

If you have ever wished you could have been around in the 60's to witness Jazz in its heyday (or wished you could go back to those days), this is the show for you. Bowl and Bunns, piano and vibraphone duo from the "Old School," are going to throw it down at The Grenwich on Saturday, April 25. They will be backed by more amazing musicians, including Eddie Bayard on sax, Brandon Meeks on bass and Mark Lomax on drums. Jon Ridley will host and perform spoken word. This session will be recorded live.

Concert starts at 7:30. Admission $10. For more info, click here for an article on Bowl and here for details on the show.

Paul Clark of the Enquirer also wrote an interesting piece about Bowl and Bunns, which can be found here.

Sunday April 26

The Noyse Merchants and Mayan Ruins

Ever wonder what music sounded like back in the Middle Ages? Check out the Noyse Merchants this Sunday evening at Northside Tavern to find out. This fun local ensemble specializes in varied secular music of the 12th-17th centuries, featuring archaic instruments such as the hurdy gurdy, viola de gamba, lute, hummelchen and much more! They will be followed by the ever-popular Mayan Ruins, who will perform their special brand of world trance music. There will also be more fun offerings throughout the night, including belly dance by Zahara, and other surprises. The show starts at 7 p.m. at the Northside Tavern's fabulous back room. $5-10.

Congratulations to the Pizza Infinity team and all the indie filmmakers in town. Keep up the great work!

The Weekend Update

April 9-11, 2009

Thursday April 9

Dr. Sketchy @ Leapin Lizard, Tonight!

An live-model sketching workshop posing as a burlesque show? Or a burlesque show masquerading as an art event? Does life imitate art, or just wear really high heels? Only one way to find out, and that's to check it out!

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School started off as an art class in Brooklyn and has since become a world-wide movement. It involves professional live models for sketching. It also incorporates an experimental attitude and a touch of the avant garde - featuring belly dancers, burlesque performances, contests, skits, poetry and other sundry entertainment. Come to draw, watch, dance, dream and be a walking work of art. The drinks will be strong - come get your Picasso on! 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9 @ Leapin Lizard, 726 Main St. Covington, KY. Bring your own art supplies. $5.

Friday April 10

Greg Harper at College Hill Coffee Co.

There is no better way to cap the week and kick off the weekend than with some great live music. Guitarist/vocalist Greg Harper does the trick, this Friday at College Hill Coffee Company. He will be performing original music as well as old favorites, such as tunes by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Anna Egge, Frightened Rabbits, S.C. With a name like Harper, you know the music is going to be good. Learn more about this modern bard here and hear him live from 7:30-9:30 Friday, April 17 at College Hill Coffee Co, 6128 Hamilton Ave. No cover charge.

Saturday April 11

Fists of Love is a band as enigmatic as their name, but their lineup reads like a well-crafted resume:

Chris Schadler, Vocals/Guitar (Fairmount Girls, Neato Torpedo, Spiderfoot)

Donna Jay Rubin, Vocals/Guitar (Snake Punching Contest)

Mike Weinel, Bass (The High & Low, Heartless Bastards, The Pariahs)

Cedric Rose, Drums (The Underwoods, Jake Speed and the Freddies)

This grouping of well-known local musicians into a new format spells intrigue. You can visit their MySpace and EPK, but the only way to really know how they sound is to hear them live. Luckily, they have a show this Saturday at The Northside Tavern, starting at 10:30 p.m. No cover.

Upcoming ...

An Evening with Victoria Rowell

We have been offered a special discount for the next show in the Smart Talk series at the Aronoff. For more details, click here. You need to be a member of the Professional Women's Meetup Group to receive the offer, but sign up is free and easy.

Emmy Award-nominated Victoria Rowell seasoned her natural grace and agility with tenacity and training and flourished as a classical dancer and actor. But her experience as a foster child and the deep conviction that art and philanthropy saved her life are what most deeply motivate this 12-time NAACP Image Award-winner. As in her memoir, The Women Who Raised Me, she speaks compellingly of the transformative power of womanhood, mentoring, art and love.

The presentation begins at 7 p.m. at The Aronoff Center, 650 Walnut St.

New Year's Picks!
(Tuesday, December 30 2008) Written by Liz Wu
Written by Liz Wu, on 30-12-2008 21:18

Hello all,

I hope everyone has had a great holiday and I wish you all a wonderful New Year!

Everywhere you look, there will be lists telling you how to spend the end of 2008. To be easy on the eyes, I will limit my picks to three:

1. If you wish you were in New Orleans, you need to head to Arnold's Cafe for New Year's Eve. They are fixing a special Cajun menu (with vegetarian options) as well as hosting a live Cajun band, CEA nominees Lagniappe. $39.95 covers dinner and $10 covers music and champagne. Food service begins at 5 and the band starts at 9 p.m. The festivities go until 2:30 a.m. (though the band plays until 1 a.m.) Walk-ins are accepted, but reservations are recommended. 210 E. 8th St. Info: 513-421-6234.

2. If swing is your thing, foxtrot down to York St. Cafe, where they will also be serving a special a la carte menu ... and featuring the Swingtime Band in their upstairs space for dancing and revelry the night long. $20 cover for the music, dinner items are priced individually. Dinner starts around 5:30 and music starts at 8:30. 738 York St. Newport. Info: 859-261-9675.

3. Or, if you prefer a little edgy, Carnivolution is the solution. This mixed bag of fun involves everything from fire dancing to live music to carnival games. $20 at the door. It's happening at The Mockbee from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. 2260 Central Parkway.

Have fun and a great 2009!

The WU November 21-23
(Thursday, November 20 2008) Written by Liz Wu
Written by Liz Wu, on 20-11-2008 16:21

Hi everyone!

It's not quite the new year, but there are going to be some slight changes to the blog. It will continue to highlight some of the great cultural, arts and music events happening in the area - and will also include some new features ... such as an artist of the week.

Each blog will begin with a link to an outstanding local artist. Cincinnati is bursting with talent - please take a moment to check out these links and get to know some of the amazing people in our community!

This week's featured person is Sharon Udoh. Besides being a genuine and generous-spirited person, she is a very talented musician, visual artist and web designer. If you've ever gone to a live show, you've probably already seen her ... she's in a bunch of bands.

Sharon Udoh: http://wannabedesigner.com/

Friday Nov. 21: Here is your chance to see world-renowned finger-style guitarist Richard Smith, along with Academy of Country Music Fiddler of the Year Stuart Duncan - playing alongside two of Nashville's in-demand studio musicians, Pat Bergeson (guitar) and Charlie Chadwick (bass). This acoustic dream team, called Hot Club of Nashville, will perform Hot Gypsy Jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt, with some Bluegrass pickin' thrown in the mix. Opening the show is Cincinnati's own Gypsy Jazz band, Faux Frenchmen. Music fans of all genres will be blown away by the musicality and virtuosity of this exciting show. 8 p.m. (doors and bar open at 6:45) at 20th Century Theatre, 3021 Madison Ave. Tickets $20. Info: www.hotclubofnashville.com

Saturday Nov. 22: MUSE women's choir celebrates a quarter-century of singing songs for peace and justice with their upcoming concert, No Friend Like a Sister - which premieres compositions by Nicola LeFanu, who wrote these pieces in honor of MUSE's 25th anniversary. The composer will be attending this world premiere, a concert of hope and humor. 8 p.m. (and 3 p.m. Sunday) at St. John's Unitarian Church, 320 Resor Ave. Tickets $8-15, one free child admittance with each adult. Info: www.musechoir.org

Sunday Nov. 23: The historic Emery Theatre is making more history - and you can be a part of it! First, there are free tours of the theatre; the Emery Theatre Corp is working very hard to reopen the venue after a decade of dormancy. From 4-5 enjoy snacks and displays at a reception at Coffee Emporium. There will be a private tour of the theatre from 5-5:30, followed by a toast (back at Coffee Emporium) from 5:30-6. At 6 p.m. the theatre opens for the annual Cincinnati Entertainment Awards, and the award ceremony begins at 7, and honors outstanding musicianship in 19 categories ... as well as live performances by Bootsy Collins, Clinch Mountain Boys, Eclipse and The Seedy Seeds. An after-party follows at Know Theatre, with a performance by the Comet Bluegrass All-Stars. It's a full day of music and a chance to see the Emery in come-back mode! Entrance to the CEA awards is $20; for those interested in donating to the Emery Theatre, checks can be made to Emery Center Corp. at Coffee Emporium, 110 East Central Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45202. For info on the tour or Emery donations: 513.421.9453 & jkaup@cinci.rr.com. For info on the CEAs: http://cea.citybeat.com/.

(Tuesday, November 11 2008) Written by Liz Wu
Written by Liz Wu, on 11-11-2008 19:49

Hi everyone, I am working out a little formatting issue with my blog but will be up and running in full force soon! In the meantime, I wanted to be sure to let you know of a really cool performance coming up next Friday. This will be great for anyone who loves guitar, fiddle, folk, Bluegrass or Jazz. It involves one of the most internationally-acclaimed fingerstyle guitarists, Richard Smith, playing with three other virtuosos (on violin, bass and guitar) - they are called Hot Club of Nashville. They will be doing a performance of Gypsy Jazz (ala Django Reinhardt) infused with Folk and Bluegrass influences ... and the opening act is Cincinnati's own local Gypsy Jazz group, Faux Frenchmen! This is definitely going to be a concert to attend - show starts at 8 p.m. (though doors and bar open at 6:45). $20 admission at 20th Century Theatre, 3012 Madison Rd 45209. For info: www.hotclubofnashville.com
