I am a huge fan of big brother big sisters. My boyfriend had a little brother before we met and now we do couples for kids. (I was planning on getting a little sister, but realized the attention needed to be given to one). I never realized how little time it takes to become a mentor. We spend more time than asked but we are also on our 3rd year of mentoring. Its a great way to help a child in need and learn something yourself. I have learned more about a little boy and his needs in a year than I ever thought I would. I have been involved in non-profits for years (I used to be a director at the YMCA) and I truly believe this is one that needs all the help we can give it. There are plenty of girls and boys who need a little guidance and help, or even just a friend once in a while. One hour a week is what they ask, but I am sure you will find yourself doing more.
